IEEE ICC 2014 Workshop on Advances in Network Localization and Navigation

The SPSC Lab is again co-organizing the Second IEEE ICC Workshop on Advances in Network Localization and Navigation (ANLN) (, which will be co-located with IEEE ICC 2014, the International Conference on Communications (, in Sydney, Australia. It will be a one-day event to be held on June 14, 2014 (tentative date; could be moved to June 10 finally)

About the Workshop

The ability to locate and seamlessly track assets in indoor/dense urban environments without access to GPS is a complex and challenging task mainly due to the harsh multipath environment and the high probability of non-line of sight (NLOS). The availability of accurate range/position information is the key requirement for many emerging applications in the public safety, commercial, and residential domains, such as locating fire fighters or objects and instruments in warehouses, hospitals and other confined spaces.

While extracting accurate location information is fundamental to the design of positioning systems, cooperative and cognitive positioning algorithms exploiting short-range communication links can enhance robustness. For example, in cognitive radio networks, geo-location and context-aware algorithms can support sensing methods to overcome e.g. the hidden node problem. The recent acquisition of WiSLAM by Apple raised a particular interest in simultaneously localization and mapping approaches based on machine learning techniques that take advantage of already available heterogeneous technologies to track mobile nodes.

The goal of the workshop is to advance the development of new positioning algorithms based on short-range wireless communications as well as new position-aware procedures to enhance the efficiency of communication networks.

This workshop will bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss technical challenges and recent results related to short-range positioning.

This workshop is organized in part by the EU Specific Targeted Research Projects SELECT and WHERE2, the EU Network of Excellence NEWCOM#, the the Italian National Project GRETA, and the Austrian National Research Network SISE.
