Guest Lecture: Yannis Stylianou

Prof. Dr. Yannis Stylia from Toshiba Cambridge Research Lab, UK, and Department of Computer Science, University of Crete, Heraklion, Creece will give a guest lecture about

“Adaptive Sinusoidal Models and their applications in speech processing”

on Monday, June 29th, 15:00, in our Seminarroom IDEG 134, Inffeldgasse 16c, ground floor.

Abstract:

Standard sinusoidal models have been shown to be successful in many applications in audio and speech processing. In this talk the passage from the standard non-adaptive and stationary sinusoidal models to the adaptive and non-stationary sinusoidal models will be presented in the context of speech analysis. Novel algorithms for the adaptive speech analysis will be presented and how they are related to the well known sinusoidal representation as well as to non-linear frequency estimators like the Newton-Gauss algorithm. Specific applications of the adaptive sinusoidal models in voice quality assessment will be presented as well their potential for well known speech technologies such as Automatic Speech Recognition, Text to Speech, will be discussed.

Biography:

Yannis Stylianou is Professor of Speech Processing at University of Crete, Department of Computer Science, CSD UOC, since 2002, and Group Leader of the Speech Technology Group at Toshiba Cambridge Research Lab, UK, since 2013. During the academic year 2011-2012 was visiting Professor at AHOLAB, University of the Basque Country, in Bilbao, Spain. He received the EE Diploma from the National Technical University, N.T.U.A., of Athens in 1991 and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Signal Processing from the Ecole National Superieure des Telecommunications, ENST, Paris, France in 1992 and 1996, respectively. From 1996 until 2001 he was with AT&T Labs Research (Murray Hill and Florham Park, NJ, USA) as a Senior Technical Staff Member. In 2001 he joined Bell-Labs Lucent Technologies, in Murray Hill, NJ, USA. His interests include speech signal processing, speech synthesis, audio processing and statistical signal processing. He is an IEEE Senior Member.
