2 Tenure-Track Professorships in Communication Acoustics

The new professorships shall contribute to two fields in communication acoustics, i.e.,

  • Human Listening: Hearing acoustics and hearing technology, human perception.
  • Machine Listening: Acoustic systems, spanning from electroacoustics and sound recording to auditory scene analysis and computer audition.

Both professors will teach for the Bachelor’s and Master’s program in “Acoustics, Music, and Information Engineering” (formerly “Elektrotechnik-Toningenieur”), a unique transdisciplinary program and success story since more than 50 years, taught by TU Graz with the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Among its highlights, this engineering programme includes professional training as a musician and the operation of a professional sound recording studio. Undergraduate courses are taught in German or English, and graduate courses are taught in English.

The professorships will complement existing strengths at the Signal Processing and Speech Communication Laboratory, which has attained high international visibility as the main organizer of INTERSPEECH 2019 in Graz and co-organizer of the FORUM ACUSTICUM 2026. Furthermore, the new professors shall integrate into the Graz Research Centre for Acoustics with strong links to colleagues in Acoustics and Environmental Noise, Multiphysics Simulation, and Aero- and Vibro-Acoustics, as well as other engineering faculties of TU Graz and local partner universities in music, psychology, and medicine. Research will span from blue-sky research to industrial cooperation projects.


Employment Requirements:

  • PhD level university education in a discipline relevant for the position.
  • An outstanding academic qualification in research and teaching in the field of Communication Acoustics.

Selection Criteria::

  • Experience with Human and/or Machine Listening
  • Visible involvement in the international scientific community
  • Appropriate didactic and pedagogical skills
  • Experience in teaching on Bachelor´s, Master´s and Doctoral program level
  • Experience in the supervision of Bachelor and Master theses as well as co-supervision of PhD theses
  • Experience in the acquisition and management of third-party funded projects
  • Leadership experience and the ability to build a research team
  • The ability to work in a team and willingness for cooperation within and outside the university
  • Competences in gender, diversity, and inclusion
  • Excellent command of English and command of German or willingness to acquire it
  • The successful candidates are expected to transfer their residence to the area of Graz.

We offer an annual gross salary of at least € 77,567.00 for a fulltime position. An overpayment based on qualification and experience is possible.

To ensure international representation of the research group and its work, excellent spoken and written competence in English is expected. Fluencey in German or the willingness to acquire it between the first 2-3 years of service is required.

The advertised positions are tenure-track career positions. After conclusion of a qualification agreement, the job holders are appointed as an Assistant Professors. Tenure and promotion to Associate Professor are contingent upon positive evaluation within the first six years of employment. Associate Professors with outstanding achievements can be promoted to Full Professor in a university-wide competitive procedure. The gross annual salary listed is the starting salary, which increases once the qualification agreement is signed.

This job posting is intended to fill two tenure-track professorships, which will be filled through separate formal procedures, as one of these positions is a tenure-track professorship for women.
