You are welcome to join Prof. Oliver Niebuhr’s (Centre for Industrial Electronics, SDU Denmark) talk on “Myths and change: About the opportunities and developments of phonetically based charismatic speech training”, on Thursday, 7th of December 2023, Room IDEG134, Inffeldgasse 16c!

Abstract: Socrates once said, “Speak, so that I may see you,” and indeed, research over the past decades has, across disciplines, revealed astonishing insights into the role of communication for conveying persuasive power and charisma and, in particular, the “make-or-break” factors of speech acoustics and prosody in that. My presentation summarizes some of these insights and, moreover, places them in the context of the development a phonetics-based speaker-charisma training, which also includes hardware and software innovations. What defines a charismatic voice, and to what extent are these characteristics gender- and culture-specific? What really helps to become a better speaker? The presentation outlines answers to these age-old questions and also dispels a few old rhetorical myths.
