The Signal Processing and Speech Communication Lab (SPSC) of Graz University of Technology is a research and education center in (nonlinear) signal processing, computational intelligence, as well as circuits & systems modeling and design. It covers applications in wireless communications, speech/audio communication, and telecommunications.

Currently, the SPSC is seeking to fill a PhD position in the area of wireless communications and indoor positioning. The position will be embedded in the Austrian research network SISE (Signal and Information Processing in Science and Engineering), an initiative focusing on basic resaearch, and in the applied research project LOBSTER, which is in the domain of public safety.
The PhD candidate will work on the radio-based indoor positioning problem, where multipath propagation and non-line-of-sight situations severely impair accuracy and robustness. The work will combine aspects of wireless communications, in particular the properties of the indoor progagation channels are yet to be fully understood, and (statistical) signal processing, computational intelligence, and navigation to compute more robust position fixes.

The research tasks and potential methodologies include:

  • Statistical signal processing
  • Bayesian inference and graphical models
  • Channel modeling and channel measurements
  • Algorithms for channel analysis
  • Multiple target tracking
  • Sensor networks and cooperative algorithms

Required skills:

  • M.Sc. degree in relevant field (EE, CS, Telematics)
  • Strong background in statistical signal processing and wireless communications
  • Independent and self-motivated working
  • Excellent communication skills, fluency in English

Please send your application including the usual material (such as CV, motivation letter, list of grades, and names of references) to witrisal@tugraz.at. The position has to be filled between Nov. 2011 and March 2012. Preliminary application deadline is Oct. 31, 2011.
