Philipp Hermüller is a doctoral student at Graz University of Technology and researches neural networks for anomaly detection in scarce and heavily-class-imbalanced datasets from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. He received his Bachelor and Master’s degree in Informatics at the Technical University of Munich. His Master’s thesis titled “AI-Based Characterization of Anomalies during Beam Dumps at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider” detects and classifies beam loss anomalies during beam dump events at the LHC. Philipp’s doctoral research, amongst others, extends this work to also detect and classify anomalies in the beam orbit data during beam dump events.
