Abstract

This thesis examines the funcionality of the edge absorber. This type of absorber is mounted in edges and damps mainly low frequencies, which has been empirically proved in the past and is impressively shown one more time with the acoustic renovation of a lecture hall. Therefore the edge absorber is commonly known as a bass trap. Due to the fact that there is no calculation methodology to calculate the impact of the absorber in advance, it has so far been rarely used for room acoustic developments.
The aim of this work is to find a method to calculate the efficency of the absorber. Therefore, modular edge absorbers were developed and measurements in various rooms were conducted. The analysis of the measurement data shows that the mode-structure of the room has a significant impact on the low-frequency absorption. A noteworthy interaction between the modes of a room and the absorption of the absorber occured, so that the effect of the edge absorber could be described as a mode-break.
Based on the collected measurement data, an existing estimation tool (Edge Absorber Calculation Tool, EACT1) will be improved by applying optimization algorithms (OPT1). Structuring on that, a new optimization-tool (OPT2) is developed, which is designed for the optimization process and to reduce the error of the estimation. A new calculation-programm (EACT2), which uses the results of the optimization tool OPT2, opens up the possibility for an improved estimation of the absorber’s efficiency. Finally, the accuracy and the usability of the new calculation tool (EACT2) is reviewed by measured results and an acoustic simulation of a acoustically renovated lecture hall using the edge absorber.
