    The PARIS Simulation Framework is a Matlab-based simulator developed by SPSC and NXP Semiconductors in 2007 through 2011. The development 2012 through 2013 (ongoing) was done at the Reynolds Lab at Duke University.

    The Framework is designed for research on wideband addons to UHF RFID, such as, for example, ranging and localization. In contrast to other UHF RFID Simulators, it is specifically designed to handle (ultra)wideband signals, fading channels, as well as nonlinearities and detuning of tags.

    The framework consists of

    • behavioral models of a UHF RFID tag (provided by NXP Semiconductors) as well as a basic reader implementation,
    • a hybrid RF propagation channel combining raytracing abilities with stochastic smallscale models,
    • parametric selftests for most subroutines,
    • characteristics generators to create the simulator’s behavioral models out of measurement data (e.g., impedances), and
    • a core framework that performs simple version control, logging, and exception handling.

    Note that the entire framework is a testing release: Even though most functions are covered by the internal selftests, bugs in non-tested features are possible. The system has been tested under Linux (with/without Kerberos/AFS) and Matlab 2008a-2012b. If you experience any problems running the Framework under other operating systems, please contact the maintainer (see below).


    • April 06, 2010: The simulation framework is finally GPL! The first (stable) version beta 1.0 has been uploaded and the homepage went online.
    • Sept 01, 2010: Upload of revision beta 2.0, which is a testing release with a lot of new features and models.
    • Sept 07, 2010: Best paper award at the 3rd EURASIP workshop on RFID technology for the framework’s tag reflection coefficient model
    • April 03, 2012: Invited talk at the “RFID Emulators and Simulators” workshop, IEEE RFID 2012, incuding an on-line live demonstration (re-simulating measurement results of a fellow presenter during his presentation).
    • May 08, 2012:Final upload of revision beta 3.0, fixing several severe bugs in beta 2.0. With this upload, the paris_osf repository has become the main development repo, so we’ll hopefully see more frequent commits now. Continuous improvements will follow over the next months…
    • May 02, 2013: The framework’s tag model was used in the context of optimized MIMO wireless power transfer, presented at IEEE RFID 2013
